Marrakech, Morocco
“Marrakech is where the East meets the West in a vibrant crazy cocktail of the Old coupled with the New and the wonders of the Souks and Kasbahs.”
If you like the “old” coupled with the “new” then Morocco is definitely the place for you. And there is nowhere better for this than Marrakesh.
For shopping; there is the wonders of the Souks and Kasbahs, where you can buy all sorts of herbs and spices.
For the social life; there is the Medina or the Main Jemaa el Fna square which is the central hive of activity of Marrakech. Go into the Jemaa el Fna (see below) and find a world of wonders from Snake Charmers and Monkeys to Street food and juice carts. Add on the street vendors and you will definitely have a lot of fun. I word of warning, don’t stop if your are not buying as you will be bothered by street vendors.
When in Marrakech a trip to the Jardin Majorelle (Majorelle Gardens) is a must. These gardens were designed by Yves Saint Laurent and contain an array of difference plants as well as having a pond filled with terrapins and gold fish. The visit to Yves Saint Laurent‘s memorial is intriguing as it is understated yet not out of place. A place of tranquillity and serenity in an otherwise bustling place.
If you are travelling alone and are female, the main square Medina of Marrakech isn’t as bad as you would expect it to be as long as you are vigilant with your belongings.
Jemaa el Fna
Another must do for anyone travelling to Marrakech is the main Jemaa el Fna Square. By day the Jemaa el Fna Square is a hive of tourists with bargains to be had for the avid shopper. Tip : Prices are set a little high so check out and bargain to agree a price before buying. There is always a deal to be had if you are happy to haggle.
If haggling is not for you, why not take sanctuary in one of the many great places to eat. The Jemaa el Fna is a truly lively place which seems to transform after sunset.
