It would be unfair to describe Paris as a “marmite” city (you either love it or hate it) but certainly while some people fall in love with Paris, others fail to see its attractions.
Paris is quite unlike any British city; it is certainly very different to London so for those who are not taken in by its charms it may be because they are looking at it from a British cultural perspective.
If Paris is not for you that is fine, there are plenty of other locations around to the world to visit. Instead let us concentrate on what makes Paris the city that many say has a supernatural charm.
Food
Oh the food! It is wonderful. Every bit is prepared with love and care. The French are justly proud of their cuisine which they see as a form of art. In many people’s opinion, the pastry and bread are by far the best in the world although the Austrian’s may not agree about the former.
Fashion
Parisians like to look nice. Why not? They believe they are the fashion capital of the world and spread throughout the city are many fashion boutiques. Most of the major French fashion brands, such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Lacroix, are currently headquartered here.
There are so many places to go and see.
So much to do.
Shopping and site seeing.
All the museums and history.
Public gardens and all the beautiful buildings and architecture, both old and new!
That’s one beauty about Paris, they know how to keep the old charm while adding new and interesting things. Eclectic seems to be invented by them!
There is a difference in Culture
It is often said by British people that Parisians are rude and can be unhelpful especially with those who struggle with the language. Look at this way – their culture is different. They are not us and we are not them. Just as British people like to be respected by French people when they come to Britain, so they too wish to be respected in their country.
By inflcting British values upon them in France appears as rudeness to them. So learning a little French and some of their customs; this goes a very long way. Once they see you try more to engage with their culture, most Parisians are very friendly, not just nice.
If they didn’t wouldn’t it be like going to Disney and they say it’s the happiest place on earth but not if the cast members were rude and mean, and the rides never worked. Besides I have noticed, while there, each person has their own way of dressing and looking fashionable, they are confident in what they chose to wear and carry themselves as such.
I fell in love with Paris and I am on my way back in a month. I can’t wait. It is so relaxing no one rushing or pushing. Strolling and enjoying all the people walking all over. It’s like when I had lunch in the park I had lunch with 100 friends as people lived their lives around. They enjoy being outside and if you’re a person who likes to people watch Paris is a wonderful place for it.
Writing this just makes me that much more anxious and excited to get there.
